BJP Makes History: Wins 206 Seats in West Bengal, Breaches Mamata's Kolkata Fortress

In a seismic political shift that has sent shockwaves across India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stormed to a landslide victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, winning 206 out of 294 seats — obliterating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and ending over 15 years of Mamata Banerjee's rule in the state.

A Historic Mandate

The BJP crossed the majority mark of 148 seats decisively, securing 206 seats with a commanding vote share of 45.13%, compared to TMC's 40.97%. This is the first time the BJP has ever formed a government in West Bengal — a state long considered an impenetrable stronghold of the Trinamool Congress.

TMC, which had swept 213 seats in the 2021 elections, has been reduced to just 81 seats in a stunning collapse of Mamata Banerjee's political empire.

BJP Breaches Kolkata

Perhaps the most dramatic chapter of this election was BJP's sweep through Kolkata itself — a city that was once the heartland of TMC's dominance. In the Presidency belt, which includes the city of Kolkata, the BJP won 52 out of 108 seats — a staggering leap from the mere 8 seats it had managed to win in 2021.

This breakthrough in urban Kolkata signals a fundamental realignment in West Bengal's politics, with voters in the city clearly rejecting TMC governance and embracing the BJP's national narrative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mamata Banerjee Loses Her Stronghold — Bhabanipur

The biggest symbolic blow of the night came from the Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata — Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's personal stronghold. In a result that stunned even BJP workers, Mamata was defeated by Suvendu Adhikari, her former lieutenant and now a senior BJP leader, by a margin of 15,114 votes.

Bhabanipur holds immense personal and political significance for Mamata — it was the seat she chose to contest as Chief Minister. Losing it to Suvendu Adhikari marks not just a personal defeat, but a powerful symbolic end to the Mamata era in Bengal politics.

TMC's Collapse Across the State

The collapse of the TMC was not limited to Kolkata. In key rural clusters covering Hooghly, Nadia, and the Parganas — 119 seats that the TMC had historically dominated — BJP won 61 constituencies, pushing TMC to just 51.

The scale of the defeat suggests a comprehensive rejection of the TMC's rule across both urban and rural West Bengal.

What This Means for India's Political Landscape

This victory marks a watershed moment in Indian politics. West Bengal, with its rich left and regional political history, has for decades resisted BJP's expansion. A BJP government in Kolkata will now fundamentally reshape the political dynamics of eastern India.

For the BJP, this is more than just a state win — it is a validation of PM Modi's outreach to Bengal and proof that the saffron wave can now reach regions once thought unreachable.

For Mamata Banerjee, the road ahead is uncertain. Having lost both her government and her personal seat, the question is whether the TMC can rebuild — or whether West Bengal's political story has entered an entirely new chapter.
